AESGP 46th Annual Meeting - The Future of Self-Medication in the New Europe
Non-pharmacy distribution for non-prescription OTC self-care, pharmacy market reforms in Sweden, Internet and mail order pharmacy developments, new consumer communications opportunities, Rx to OTC switches and new OTC medicines categories as well as changes to the European healthcare legal and political agenda were among the topics driving the AESGP 46th annual meeting in June.
With Croatia’s accession to the European Union imminent where would there have been a better place than Dubrovnik to hold the AESGP’s 46th annual meeting in June this year?
The meeting titled the “Future of self-medication in the new Europe” opened a new agenda for the self-care industry. For the new Europe did more than refer to geographic expansion but included the exciting developments of new channels of distribution and new forms of digital consumer information.
“The New Europe” also means ground breaking new non-prescription medicines, some of them in totally novel indication areas, which have now become a reality. The conference also explored recent developments in healthcare and their implications for the political self-care environment.
Among the key speakers - James Hallat, General Manager, GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare United Kingdom talked about the launch of the anti-obesity product Alli. Etienne de Laroulliere, Vice President, Head of Global BusinessUnit OTC, Nycomed, Luc Massart, Chief Operating Officer, HRA Pharma and Brian McNamara , Region Head Europe OTC, Novartis Consumer Health presented on product innovation and Rx to OTC switches.
Andy Tisman , Senior Principal, Consumer Health at IMS presented on the state of the European market together with future trends. Magnus Tegström, Novartis Consumer Health, Sweden discussed the tremendous change in the Swedish consumer health care market environment
Dagmar Roth - Behrendt, Vice-President of the European Parliament and Martin Terberger, Head of Unit Pharmaceuticals, European Commission brought life to the changing political and regulatory environments in Europe.
James W Dudley marketing strategy consultant at James Dudley Management opened the pages on the strategic impact of Internet and mail order pharmacies on the European consumer healthcare market. His presentation was based on extracts from his latest market report OTC Distribution in Europe the 2010 edition – Driving the Recovery.
